Bio:  I graduated from Calvin University in 2020 with a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education with minors in Integrated Science and Mathematics. While in college I worked as an environmental educator in Calvin’s Ecosystem Preserve and Native Gardens teaching kids ranging from preschool to fifth grade about God’s creation around us here in Michigan. I am grateful that God has brought me back to Heritage as a teacher after attending as a student. I attend Georgetown PRC with my wife and daughter.

Cathy Kamps – Junior High

Classes Taught: History and Math

Bio: I attended public school throughout my entire life. I was fostered from age four until I graduated high school at seventeen years of age. After graduation, I moved to Walker, MI where I attended Grand Valley State University for five years. In 2006, I graduated with an Elementary Teaching Minor and a History Major. Throughout college, I worked at Applebees in Grandville, MI. Here I met my loving husband, George. After many years of dating and many years of catechism (I was raised Baptist), George and I married in 2007. We have been blessed with six wonderful children, all of whom have attended or are attending HCS. There is an immeasurable amount of joy and gratitude I feel when I observe and experience the atmosphere and godly instruction at HCS. For years, my children have been a part of the beautiful community of saints here. In His good plan, God has led me back into education to teach at the same school my husband attended and now my children. Please continue to keep all the staff and students in your prayers! We thank you for the innumerable ones already made. 

Dan VanDyke – Seventh Grade

Classes Taught: English, Geography, History, and Choir

Bio: I attended Covenant Chr. High School. I then received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education with an English major and a Music minor from Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. I began teaching here at Heritage in the fall of 1989. I taught 5th and 6th grade my first year here, and then moved to teaching English at the Junior High level. I have also directed at least one choir every year.

I have been the Executive Secretary for the Federation Board, and I’ve also served as President of the PRTI Board.

My professional development classes have included courses at Grand Valley State, Calvin College, the University of Phoenix, and recently, a couple highly beneficial and practical seminars at the Midwest Brain and Learning Institute in Holland, Michigan, sponsored by Ottawa Area ISD and Hope College.

Nicki Westra – Seventh Grade

Classes Taught: History

Bio: When starting at GVSU after high school, I knew I wanted to pursue a teaching degree.  I spent HOURS working out my schedule and was able to graduate with a BS degree in Group Science and an Elementary Education minor in just 3.5 years.  This helped me secure a job in the Hamilton School District where I taught 4th grade for a few years before the Lord blessed us with our first daughter.  I enjoyed the next 17 years at home raising the daughters God placed in our home.  This year I am enjoying being back in a classroom setting teaching American History.  Jeff and I have had the conversation that if the Lord leads me back into teaching, my dream job would be American History 🙂    I am having to learn and relearn many things but am truly enjoying every day interacting with the students and staff at Heritage Christian.  I feel very blessed to be in this role this year.
